When you travel around the world, you learn a lot. The awe from new and different things, situations and habits comes up naturally, often without even looking for them. Obviously, we are prone to compare a lot and the phrase “Wow, I’ve never seen this!” is as common as coconuts in Southeast Asia.
But after looking closer, we all might realize one thing: that whatever different language we speak, whenever our hometown is and whoever our ancestors are, we are all the same in our deep nature. This similarity is usually found deeply in our relation with the spiritual world.
In our next photo essay we would like to share with you the photographs of people in these intimate moments, when they are alone but still connected to someone or something that goes beyond their immediate sensory perception.
On the road, we’ve seen that people pray with the same passion, devotion, respect, humility or joy everywhere in the world. And even if religions or gods might be different from one culture to another, the prayers, chants, gospels, songs or meditative states connect men and women and dissolve our differences.

Love this collection of beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing:) But I have a question for you: When you take photos like these, do you ask if there’s okay to take pictures and to publish them?
Photos like these make you feel like you’re there and experience it yourself 🙂
Thanks a lot. I usually ask when is possible. But being this a particular subject that requires not disturbing anyone, in this case I try to catch the pictures without asking. People usually they don’t mind about your presence and taking pictures of them, as long as you are respectful and silent.
What beautiful photos! But more importantly, what a unique idea for a photo essay, I haven’t seen one about people praying before. I really loved the photo of the girl in Ubud.
Cheers 🙂
Hello Dariece. Glad you like the essay. 🙂
Love the Chiang Mai and Ubud pics! I’ve spent months in each spot; so many awesome photos of people praying, living, etc. Thanks Gianna!
Thanks a lot Ryan. We lived in Chiang Mai for 3 months and we loved to be there.
Needless to say that those photos are simply amazing! I particularly love the one in Bali of the couple bathing in the pool of Tirtha Empul Temple.
Thanks a lot Franca. Glad you like them 🙂
I am not religious but I must admit that seeing people praying has always given me a feeling of peace.
Thank you, Suki, we much appreciate it!
This is very beautiful, liked the pic of man praying in front of the German sign for money exchange, good work!
Thanks, Kerstin!
Very beautiful collection and very inspiring. The couple bathing in the pool of Tirtha Empul Temple in Bali is gorgeous. Very special. I love the photo of the monk statue with sun glasses on.
Thank you very much, Lesh, the one of the couple from Bali is my favourite as well.

Thanks a lot, Shelley! Very glad you like them 🙂
This has to be one of my favorite photography subjects – I have traveled to Tibet, Bhutan, Iran, Israel, Japan and more just to be part of these spiritual experiences. Sitting in a temple as Buddhist monks chant is mesmerizing! Keep sharing – love em 🙂
Thank you for commenting, Joseph! Wow, documenting spirituality in the countries you’ve mentioned must have been great! Agreed, sharing the moments of meditation with monks enhances the whole experience. Happy travels 🙂
