Coastal Areas to Explore in the Mediterranean

There are many ways to see the Mediterranean, from guided tours to spontaneous road trips and even cycling adventures, but what about by sea?

Cruises are a popular way of seeing what the region has to offer, but exploring the Mediterranean with a yacht charter allows for bespoke luxury and tailored routes. Whether you’re enjoying the nightlife in Albania or sunbathing in Greek coves, you can experience it all at your own pace.

Albania’s Untouched Coastline

Stepping out of the shadows of nearby Greece and Croatia, Albania is growing in popularity with people looking for something new on an unspoiled section of coastline. You will be treated to ancient history and sandy beaches that are yet to be tainted by overcrowding.

When sailing the Albanian Riviera, be sure to stop off at Saranda, a coastal town known for its vibrant nightlife and as the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Butrint National Park.

If golden sands and azure seas are what you had in mind, the secluded beach of Gjipe is easily accessed by boat – you’ll find peace and tranquility away from crowded resorts.

Greece’s Serene Islands: Hydra and Paxos

The Greek archipelago has been a famous sailing destination for years, but its popularity has led to overcrowding. If you are looking to stay away from well-known destinations such as Mykonos and Santorini, the smaller islands of Hydra and Paxos have a quieter, more laid-back feel.

With its car-free roads, preserved stone buildings, and some 300 churches, visiting Hydra is like stepping back in time. Favored stops include the harbor, which is abuzz with artists and is great for picking up souvenirs or trying the local cuisine.

Only a short sail away is Paxos, alluring visitors to its crystal-clear waters, secluded coves, and olive groves. Head to Lakka, the second largest village on the island, where you can moor up and take advantage of the calm seas that surround the port.

Italy’s Pontine Islands: A Hidden Archipelago

Have you already sailed the Amalfi Coast but feel enticed back to Italy? It’s not hard to understand why. With beautiful architecture, clear blue seas and a cuisine that delights your tastebuds, it’s no wonder Italy is one of the most visited countries each year. However, if you are looking to sail an area that’s less explored, head to Ponza.

Ponza is a crescent-shaped island and the largest of the Pontine Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Less developed for tourism than Ischia and Capri, Ponza offers visitors rustic charm and an insight into local life. A semi-circle of colorful buildings, many of which are restaurants serving fresh seafood dishes, greets you in the harbor – and you won’t want to leave!

Take your yacht to quiet coves where you can swim and snorkel, whiling away a day in tranquil waters: Chiaia di Luna, Cala di Lucia Rosa, and Cala dell’Acqua are ones to note.
